E. Mervyn Taylor was a wood engraver, painter, illustrator, sculptor and designer. Although he embraced a broad range of media he is noted for his woodcuts. He was also a pioneer among New Zealand artists in studying Polynesian cultures. His woodcuts featured New Zealand birds, plants and elements from Māori legend.
His works have been exhibited widely in New Zealand and overseas and he is represented in the main galleries in New Zealand.
Taylor's work was designed to be illustrative rather than inventive and to give pleasure with its elegant and decorative order of composition.
