An exhibition of Chinese Art toured Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, organized by Captain George Humphreys-Davies, Honorary curator of Oriental Collections at the War Memorial Museum, Auckland.
The exhibition comprised more than 400 items from important collections including those of Queen Mary and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Some items came from local collectors such as Christchurch architect Heathcote Helmore and Mr H. Acton Adams of Greta Valley, North Canterbury. Humphreys-Davies' own extensive collection was well represented in the exhibition.
Christchurch people flocked to the exhibition. "...in the eighteen days that this exhibition has been open in the McDougall Art Gallery the attendance was one-third of the total at the exhibition of Chinese art in London that was open for six months, with the whole population of the United Kingdom to draw upon." Captain Humphreys-Davies wrote in a letter to the editor of the Press (2 June 1937, p.7).
