WORD Christchurch presents its most exciting festival yet. The spirit of adventure, and of 125 years of women's suffrage, runs through the festival with writers who take risks in their lives as well as their work.

American science-fiction writer Ted Chiang went from cult status to a much wider readership when visionary director Denis Villeneuve turned his remarkable short story, Story of Your Life, into the film Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and mysterious alien heptapods who just want to communicate the meaning of time to us. A thoughtful writer with a strong philosophical bent, Ted, who is based in Seattle, has published fifteen short stories, novelettes and novellas and won numerous science-fiction awards. He talks with science fiction and fantasy writer Karen Healey.
