Much of artist Austen Deans' four-year Prisoner of War experience was spent in Poland.

From 1941 to 1943 a group of fellow artists in camp drew and painted together, encouraging and challenging each other, having quite an influence on the young Austen's art. Last year his son, Paul, grabbed an opportunity, on the tail of his 2014 wood-sculpting escapade to Russia, to visit those Polish sites and relate to them using images of Austen's paintings from that time. Paul aims to use some of those images to help tell the story of his own experience of walking into history; into the actual nineteenth century Prussian Forts that housed the prisoners of war of Stalag XXA.

Artist, sculptor and one-time President of the Friends, Paul divides his time between his own art practice and managing the AA Deans Art Trust. This was his second excursion into Russia and, with daughter Hannah living in Berlin, the opportunity to trace steps of father/grandfather was too good for both of them to miss.
