The little-known first photographs of the Aoraki/Mount Cook region predate 1870 and rank as some of the finest of all mountain photographs, not only in New Zealand but also when compared to other early mountain photography from elsewhere. The lecture also features photographs from other parts of inland Canterbury by the same photographer. Barry Hancox is a photo-historian and has assembled a large collection of nineteenth-century New Zealand photographs. He writes on photography and collecting and is the founding editor of The New Zealand Ephemerist magazine.
