Fashion-conscious landowning gentlemen in 1730s England followed a prescribed attire: lengthy coats with outsized cuffs over long embroidered waistcoats, linen shirts with ruffled cuffs and cravats, tricorne hats and fancy powdered wigs. Leonard Mapes, twenty-six when painted here, went further, donning white gloves and a sword. In 1750, Mapes held the position of high sheriff of Norfolk.
