Luigi Rossini published his impressive Le Antichità Romane (The Rome of Antiquity) series in 1823. Included was this view of the Portico of Octavia, built by Emperor Augustus after 27 BCE, and the home of Rome’s principal fish market, Pescheria, from medieval times until the late nineteenth-century. In the foreground, a small group receive provisions at the door of the eighth-century church, Sant’Angelo.
