Men stand round inspecting a speckled grey and white Clydesdale horse in Margaret Barnard’s The Vet’s Visit. Horses like Clydesdales and Suffolks were the powerhouse of Britain’s rural communities until the early twentieth century when machinery such as tractors began to replace them. Barnard’s use of bold blocks of colour and simplified forms give this old-world view of farming life a very modern twist.
