Christchurch-born Russell Clark worked as the principal illustrator for the New Zealand School Journal for many years from 1940. It provided him with opportunities to pursue his interest in Māori culture, and to share it with the Journal’s many readers. In 1950 Clark undertook a commissioned project in Te Urewera, on the east coast of Te Ika-a-Māui the North Island. It focused on Ruatahuna, a small town in the heart of the Ngāi Tūhoe rohe (district). This lively ink drawing shows a school building nestled amongst trees, surrounded by young pupils who run, chat and take turns with the skipping rope.
