German-born Dutch artist Peter Lely settled in England in 1643 during turbulent times. He established a large studio and became the leading portrait painter to the royal court. Paris-born Frances Stuart arrived in London in 1663 after the Restoration. She served as a royal maid-of-honour and rejected Charles II’s intention to make her his queen. Frances was the model for Britannia on a 1667 commemorative peace medal, and her image was repeated thereafter in British coinage.
