Nancy Mason was an English-born weaver who came to Aotearoa New Zealand in the 1970s, her large table-looms in tow. She would often visit mills in Te Konika o Matamata Mosgiel and bustling carpet factories here in Ōtautahi Christchurch to source wool to weave with. The textures and earthen colours of this piece express her love and appreciation for the fibre, retaining some of the soft browns and creams of a natural fleece. Mason was an excellent teacher of weaving and taught at the Kilmarnock Sheltered Workshop in Ōtautahi for many years before moving to Whakatū Nelson where she taught at Nelson Polytechnic.
