The subject of this print is the oil painting of the same name by David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690), now in the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille. At the time this print was made, the painting was owned by the Duc de Valentinois (1720-1795). His collection was one of many which was was broken up and distributed by Napoleon to newly created art museums in French provincial cities. Lille was one of the main beneficiaries of this process of 'vulgarisation'.
