This print depicts the painting now known as ‘The Virgin and the infant Jesus worshipped by Saint John the Baptist, St Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine of Alexandria’ in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris. At the time this print was engraved, the painting was attributed to Giulio Procaccini (1574-1625) but it is now stated to be by Pieter de Witte (1548-1628). De Witte’s name appears in many different forms and spellings including Peter Candid and Pietro Candido.
