In the years immediately following her retrospective exhibition at London’s Tate Gallery in 1968, leading modernist sculptor Barbara Hepworth made a small number of print portfolios, serigraphs (silk screen-prints) and lithographs. Barbara used her investigative approach to printmaking processes to develop ideas that later became sculptures. Likewise, her sculptural work informed her prints. Winter Solstice – 1970 conveys something of her response to the changing light and seasons from her studio in St Ives, Cornwall. Hepworth moved to St Ives in 1939, the same year she began making stringed sculptures – resonant with the taut, interwoven lines in this work.
