Mumbai-born Townsend Hungerford was a skilled watercolourist who at sixteen entered a lifelong East India Company military service. Savouring occasional armchair travel, he based this view of Segovia, Spain with its early 1800s bullring and ancient Roman aqueduct on an illustration by Scottish artist David Roberts, published in London in 1837.
