Looking out from her Wellington workplace window one day in December 1948, Juliet Peter saw five elephants walking slowly down the street. Seizing a pencil and sketchbook, she left the School Journal offices where she worked as an illustrator, followed the elephants and the accompanying circus entourage and drew as their giant tent was being raised. She also attended a performance before the circus left three weeks later. Two of Peter’s circus-themed designs were published as School Journal covers in 1950 and she returned to her circus sketches after studying lithography in London in 1951 and 1953, creating this and a related daytime print.
