McLeod’s works are always physically aggressive, and many of his wall-based paintings have a strongly sculptural feel. With Ringmaster, and the other freestanding cut-out works that accompanied it, McLeod brought his paintings down onto the floor, directly invading the viewer’s personal space with all the bawdy humour and drama of the circus.
