Away past elsewhere
Behind the scenes
An exhibition of books and ephemera produced at Wellington's Fernbank Studio has just opened at the Peterborough Street library to coincide with National Poetry Day, which is today.
Fernbank Studio is the private press of Brendan O'Brien, one of New Zealand's finest letterpress printers and book designers and away past elsewhere surveys his work over the past 20 years. O'Brien has collaborated with some of New Zealand's most significant poets including Joanna Margaret Paul, Bill Manhire, Jenny Bornholdt, Kate Camp, Geoff Cochrane and Gregory O'Brien. Artists have also worked with Fernbank Studio over the years including Noel McKenna, Pip Culbert and Mari Mahr but perhaps one of O'Brien's most significant collaborations was with Bill Manhire and Ralph Hotere when he printed the book PINE as Printer in Residence at the Otakou Press in 2005.
