Behind the scenes

Coventry Cathedral has been invoked as one way of handling our own cathedral re-build: keep the ruins and build something new alongside.

What irony then, to discover that Coventry's ruins are now themselves in, well, ruins. They need expensive restoration, not to return them to their pre-war state but to maintain them as ruins, the condition in which, apparently their greatest cultural and heritage value now lies! So engineers and stonemasons will now be engaged to keep a ruin in a state of disrepair. You couldn't make it up.
