Redfern Gallery

Behind the scenes

Recently whilst on holiday in London I worked on Christchurch Art Gallery's behalf at the Redfern Gallery in Mayfair.

The project was to photograph the Redfern's archive of exhibition catalogues so that our gallery can extract information relevant to the Rex Nan Kivell collection of British Modernist prints. Numerous artists who exhibited at the Redfern are represented in our collection and the hope is that this information will enable us to establish dates and provenance for many of the Nan Kivell works. The catalogues relevant to the research run from 1923 through to 1953 and I completed copying as far as 1937, taking over 1100 photographs.

It was great to finally see the gallery, having heard and talked so much about it. It's quite small and situated on the ground and basement floors of its building in Cork Street, just behind the Royal Academy. They represent over 20 contemporary artists and sell modern and contemporary paintings, drawings, watercolours, sculpture and original prints.

The managing directors and staff were very welcoming and interested in Christchurch Art Gallery and its connection with Rex Nan Kivell. One of the directors looked through a list of the Nan Kivell Collection prints and was very impressed by their quantity and quality.

A selection of these prints was exhibited by Christchurch Art Gallery in Graphica Britannica : Highlights from the Rex Nan Kivell Gift
