Knowing Bill Culbert will make a wonderful new piece for the Venice Biennale in June 2013 makes the impending demolition of Christchurch's Convention Centre somewhat more poignant for me. For it involves the end of his site-specific work, Blue, 2000 – in my view one of Christchurch's public art highlights.
We've talked with Bill about this. He's realistic and, while in theory, the work can be re-manufactured by Signtech and installed with his involvement within a year of its decommissioning, our next Convention Centre is likely to be a different design and it will certainly take longer than a year.
Let's hope we can negotiate a spot for Blue II or maybe New blue in some great public building in the central city's rebuild.
