Behind the scenes
One of the strangest things about Christchurch's post-quake afterlife is how quiet and empty those once-bustling central city streets have become.
It wasn't just the shops, or the passers-by, but the (er) 'characters' that made the CBD hum — often with the mood of reform, as is neatly captured in this photo of Chancery Arcade from the Gallery's collection by David Cook from 1984.
NB: the (crucial) fainter text at the bottom reads: 'It's the parent's job, not the school's'.
