Three-Dimensional Fibre, organised by the Govett-Brewster Gallery, consisted of 34 fibre sculptures by 17 international artists, both established and new talents.
Two of the works were 22 feet tall, a number 12 feet and under, and the majority hung from the ceiling. The methods and materials used varied widely and in combination. Techniques such as macramé, braiding, knotting, plaiting, knitting, wrapping, weaving and crochet were all used. Divergent materials such as wool, nylon monofilament, horse hair, camel hair, linen, rayon, cotton rope and cloth, sisal and jute were used either individually or together.
Doreen Fraser, a local weaver, gave a talk at the opening about modern weaving from a weaver's point of view.
The exhibition was a great success with over 9,000 visitors.
