Georges Rouault in his studio
This exhibition, brought to New Zealand by the Auckland Art Gallery, was shown in the new Exhibition Hall of the Canterbury Public Library.
Rouault completed the drawings for his Miserere series between 1914 and 1918 and there is no doubt that the horror and spectacle of war had a considerable effect on his themes and execution. This series was said to be one of the major humanist statements of the twentieth century.
The grandeur, intensity and a sense of tragedy in the series made it one of Rouault's greatest achievements.
