This was an impressive collection of paintings showing the rich variety and diversity of contemporary British art. The sheer size of the exhibition meant that the Gallery could not accommodate all 90 works and so half (numbers 40 to 90 in the catalogue) was displayed at the Canterbury Society of Arts.

Artists ranged from Nicholson, Sutherland and Bacon with well established international reputations to a new generation.

Films designed to highlight various aspects of this exhibition were also shown. Talks on painting were given by Don Peebles, lecturer in Painting at University of Canterbury.
