Peter Peryer: Tecomanthe Speciosa

This exhibition is now closed

Tecomanthe Speciosa is a rare twining climber that was discovered on one of the Three Kings Islands northwest of Cape Reinga in 1946. This one specimen, which had not flowered since 1946, was saved from extinction by the eradication of feral goats from the island. All the vines we have today descend from this one plant.

Acknowledging its uniqueness, Peter Peryer has photographed a single small flower. Presented here as a large banner, he not only plays with notions of scale, but elegantly conveys a message about survival and the fragility of nature.

Peryer began his photographic career in 1972. He has exhibited his work both internationally and nationally and is included in significant public and private collections. In 2000 he was an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate.
