This exhibition of 79 works by Sir Muirhead Bone and Augustus John was brought to New Zealand by the Empire Art Loans Exhibition Society and toured Australia and New Zealand. Only the galleries in Melbourne and Auckland declined.
These two modern British artists could not have been more different although both were influenced by the New English Art Club. Both were excellent draughtsmen though the realism of Bone's work contrasted with the lyrical eloquence of John. Bone's work consisted of elaborate drawings, mainly of places, whereas John's are mostly portraits which are expressive and economical in line.
The exhibition was promoted as a holiday attraction and was well received with 2,000 visitors attending.
Admission cost 1 shilling, juniors six pence.
