The New Zealand tour of this collection of 40 works was made possible by the co-operation of the Allentown Art Museum and its Director, Richard Hirsch through the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council.
The show covered three schools: abstract expressionism, the hard edge school, characterised by its clean abstract shapes, flat often brilliant colour and meticulously arranged compositions and the figurative school.
Amongst 39 artists included were Hans Hofman, Franz Kline, Larry Rivers, Sam Francis, Philip Guston and James Dine.
Admission was one shilling and the catalogue cost ninepence.
952 people attended the exhibition.
Downoad an article by Hamish Keith which appeared in the New Zealand Woman's Weekly, where he describes the same show as it appeared at the Auckland Art Gallery. [PDF 1.2MB]
