The Gibon Sengai scrolls are national treasures of Japan and were owned by Mr Sazo Idemitsu. The exhibition was toured by Auckland Art Gallery with assistance from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council and the Japanese Society for Cultural Relations.
These Japanese scrolls, expressing the philosophy of Zen, were painted more than 200 years ago by Gibon Sengai, a priest, and the works are characteristically Japanese in their precision and simplicity. The paintings were mounted on exquisite linens and silk brocade. The catalogues themselves were works of art.
Water-worn stones from Hokitika were used as a continuous border two and a half feet wide, on the floor around the walls where the works were hung. A heavy marine rope provided a kerb containing the stones.
It is worth noting that this exhibition was part of the official entertainment for the August school holidays.
