Gray Nicol: New Work

This exhibition is now closed

Gray Nicol’s suite of three videos are a meditation on the fluidity of time and memory. C.U. Madonna depicts a sculptural relief of mother and child, carved by Nicol. As the camera moves slowly and intimately over the relief it seems as if it is imbued with an inner life, heightened by the soundtrack of Christian choral chants. For the work Remember Snow Nicol carved a bust of a childhood acquaintance called Snow from memory. Again the sculpture elicits an otherworldly presence as water moves across and distorts the surface of the face, which appears as both stone and flesh. In the final video Big Time, an eyeball stares out from a distorted reflection of a face within a ball. The ball begins to rock, building up speed and mesmerising us with its unflinching gaze.
