A selection of 47 early New Zealand paintings from the period 1840-1900 was arranged by the Alexander Turnbull Library. It was designed particularly for small centres, especially where no art gallery as such was available. The average size of the paintings was 24" X 18".
Artists included were Sir William Fox, Nicholas Chevalier, Samuel Butler, John Gully, Charles Heaphy, Gustavus von Tempsky, Julius von Haast and James Nairn.
1287 people attended. Admission was free and catalogues cost two shillings.
