This exhibition of 63 contemporary paintings and nine sculptures by leading Australian artists was opened by Australian Government Trade Commissioner, Mr D. M Walker. It was assembled by the Macquarie Gallery in Sydney for the Auckland Art Gallery.
The majority of the artists were Australian born or were New Australians. New Zealand was represented by two sculptures by Alan Ingham. He was born in Christchurch, moved to Sydney in 1946 and from 1950 to 1953 worked as Henry Moore's assistant. Roland Wakelin was another New Zealand artist who had lived in Sydney since 1912 and whose works were represented in all Australian State Galleries and public collections.
It was noted that missing from the Christchurch exhibition were notable artists Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, John Brack, Russell Drysdale and John Olsen.
According to Gallery director W.S Baverstock the number of visitors was 'satisfactory, considering the counter-attack' of Hay's Exhibition. Explanatory talks were offered at the weekend.
