Auckland-based artist Clint Watkins's interest in sound art has developed over the past decade alongside his work as a video artist. The rich layers of droning sounds in Avalanche #1 were constructed from a single field-recording of an air conditioning unit. In Watkins's hands, the humble sound of the air conditioner has been transformed and processed into a seemingly endless symphonic chorus, conveying an intense feeling of distance and depth – almost as though the listener was standing within a vast cavernous chamber.
