Join us for a special screening of this documentary, followed by a discussion between Nathan Pōhio (Senior Curator, Māori Art, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki) and Jan Bieringa (Creative Producer of Signed, Theo Schoon).
Offering insights to the film’s production and exploring the many threads of Aotearoa’s art history, this exclusive in-conversation will expand upon the daring career of Theo Schoon and its significance in Aotearoa’s creative landscape.
This documentary from director/producer team Luit and Jan Bieringa (The Man in the Hat, The HeART of the Matter) is partly narrated by Schoon himself, a charismatic artist who wowed 1940s Christchurch. He rubbed shoulders with Colin McCahon and Rita Angus, and shared his love of Māori design with Gordon Walters. He also fought for, and damaged, historic cave drawings, and adopted koru and kōwhaiwhai patterns for his own art. (Film running time, 100 mins)
