Mikael Gartner, member of the New Zealand USAR Team, will speak about his Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) experience in Haiti, Japan, Peru and the US.

After major disasters the extent of the calamity is televised (and sensationalised) around the world. Within hours teams of rescuers are trying to save loved ones and their fellow countrymen. This presentation will provide a journey through the human aspects of this—the thoughts and interactions between rescuers and those who are rescued. Photography and video footage will provide an insight into visions and voices that most of the public never see. Mikael will speak about his Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) experience in Haiti, Japan, Peru and the US.

Mikael Gartner is a structural engineer with Aurecon. He is a UNANZ Special Officer of Humanitarian Affairs, a former member of a US USAR team and a member of the New Zealand USAR team.
