All welcome to the launch of Colours of a Life: The life and times of Douglas MacDiarmid by Anna Cahill, a richly edited biography of one of New Zealand's most accomplished expatriate painters.

Born in Taihape in 1922, he "came alive" in 1940s Christchurch before setting off to "devour the world". Now almost 96, still living in Montmartre, Paris, MacDiarmid's life has been an adventure – a bisexual man who had to leave his country to live life on his own terms; a deliberately untrained painter determined to make his name in the art world; an audacious, inquisitive spirit who overcame hardship and tragedy to become one of New Zealand's most engaging cultural ambassadors abroad while barely being recognised at home.
