Was Christchurch the centre of culture in New Zealand in the first half of the twentieth century? Art historian Janet Abbott will look at some of the best-known artists of the period, who all called Christchurch home.

Christchurch produced some our best-known artists of the period, including Sydney Thompson, Rita Angus, Rata Lovell-Smith, Bill Sutton and Rhona Haszard. There were also the Canterbury School of Regional Landscape Painters who painted the local landscape in an impressionistic way. This talk will also look at some of the lesser-known artist who have emerged from the Canterbury College School of Art and had long careers as professional artists and as art teachers.
