Hear local architect Alun Wilkie discuss this important restoration project.
Knox Church, designed in the distinctive Gothic Revival style by architects Robert and Edward England, has been a prominent feature on the corner of Victoria Street and Bealey Avenue since 1902. Badly damaged in the earthquakes, this building featured soaring timber archways, an imposing pipe organ and two beautiful stained-glass windows set into the west end of the nave. During 2013/14 Wilkie + Bruce Architects have undertaken restoration work, retained the original roofline, strengthened the building and added the distinctive copper detailing to the exterior.
Alun Wilkie, who graduated as an architect in 1972, has been director of Wilkie + Bruce Architects for thirty-two years. The company specialises in commercial, educational, residential and heritage adaptation work; their rebuild design of Knox Church received the Canterbury heritage Seismic Award in October 2014.
