Barely visible in the darkness, a kākāpō spreads its wings and fixes its attention on the moss-covered fallen branch before it. Emerging from deep shadow, the bird is engaged in the ordinary work of feeding.Archaeological evidence suggests that kākāpō were once widespread throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, occupying a range of forest habitats. In Avifauna IV, Denise Copland presents a glimpse into a nocturnal world that few people ever encounter.
