The Lapita people are thought to have been the original inhabitants of Fiji and their distinctive pottery, decorated with motifs impressed into the clay with tooth-like stamps, can be dated from 1500-500 BC In Gavin Chilcottt’s work, these features are stylised into motifs with a contemporary feel. Chilcott’s work is quintessentially Post-Modern in that he borrows imagery and ideas from a variety of traditions. Atoll-like forms appear to float as three-dimensional entities. They show the warm earthy colours of Polynesia, while softer blue forms suggest both water and sky. This bowl, painted by Chilcott, was made by the Australian potter Errol Barnes. Chilcott was born in Auckland and studied at the University of Auckland’s School of Fine Arts. He has participated in group and individual exhibitions throughout New Zealand and in 1992 was the Trustbank Canterbury/Arts Council Artist in Residence at the Christchurch Arts Centre. His work is held in the collections of many public art institutions in New Zealand and Australia.
