About the artist
Bill Sutton spent two and a half months in Venice in 1974, producing a remarkable group of watercolours that explored the city’s buildings and architectural details. Among his subjects was Ca’ d’Oro (Palazzo Santa Sofia), built between 1428 and 1430 and widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Venetian Gothic architecture. Its elaborate façade of carved stone, tracery and ornament attracted Sutton’s close attention. His diary records the challenges of painting outdoors: after interruptions from rain, he returned repeatedly to the site, completing the work only “after a mighty struggle”.
