Originating in ancient classical art, putti (or cherubs) experienced a resurgence in Renaissance painting and sculpture, and again during the eighteenth-century Rococo period. Symbolising love and innocence with allegorical and religious associations, they were also admired for their decorative charm by aristocratic art patrons.
