Marshalsea was a notorious debtor’s prison in Southwark, London from 1373 to 1842. Its inmates included Charles Dickens’s father John, who was jailed in 1824 over a debt to his local baker, which his twelve-year-old son was forced to work off in a shoe-blacking factory.
