The subject of this print is described in Livy's 'Ab urbe condita' where the Roman heroine Cloelia crosses the Tiber to rescue, on horseback, hostages from the hands of the Clusians.
From an original painting in the Musée du Louvre, Paris Jacques Stella (1596-1657).
