Robert Weir Allan was a younger son of a successful Glasgow engraver and publisher. His early successes in painting led to five years’ study from 1875 at the Académie Julian in Paris before returning to Glasgow. Relocating in 1883 to London, hub of the English-speaking art world, he remained an inveterate traveller and particularly favoured coastal and fishing village locations in Scotland and England. This work is a watercolour study for a larger work in oils purchased by Glasgow Museums in 1904.
