Quadrant: Four themes of Petrus van der Velden, 20 October 2006 – 25 March 2007
This charcoal sketch was drawn in a spontaneous and rapid manner. An economic, expressive use of line suggests the sitter’s figure and clothing, while a little more care and detail has been applied to the facial features. The subject is unknown but the sketch is from one of Van der Velden’s Australian sketchbooks, used when he was based in Sydney between 1898 and 1903.
