This drawing relates to the painting of the same title reproduced in 'Leo Bensemann: Portraits, Masks & Fantasy Figures, a Catalogue' compiled by Caroline Otto, Nelson, N.Z. Published by Nikau Press, 2005 (page 117)
Excerpts from page 117:
‘Leo’s letter to Mary from Germany, October 1979: ...We went to Maria Laach yesterday week, a marvellous Benedictine monastery dating from 1092 and still in perfect condition. It has beautiful farmlands around it, a small but very deep lake and a beautiful nursery where we bought a number of shrubs, of course...’
‘The painting was inspired by a postcard of a sculpture of Samson with a lion which is at Maria Laach’
