In this etching Julia Morison creates a dramatic contrast between ordered and freely executed abstract shapes. Precisely measured geometric patterns are overgrown with organic-looking, freely drawn imagery reminiscent of plant roots. Flotsam and Jetsam IV is part of a recently completed suite of etchings that relates in many ways to Morison’s recent major work, Gargantua’s Petticoat.
Morison studied graphic design at the Wellington Polytechnic before going on to study at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. She recently collaborated with Kate Unger at the newly established Watermark Studio in Christchurch. Etching in particular, with its variety of mark-making and tonal variations, is well suited to Morison’s work.
