Richard van der Aa graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 1985, and held his first solo exhibition the same year. He moved to Sydney in 1989 and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales in 2004. He has had many solo exhibitions in New Zealand and Australia, and currently lives in Paris where he works as a full-time artist.
