In the Round
2006, plaster
This pair of sculptures by Phil Murray appears simple and effortless, belying the complex technical process involved in the casting of the plaster spheres. The work evokes the experience of being inside a large, yet confined, structure. The shape of Murray’s body curled in a semi-foetal position seems to float through the core of the spheres, visible in the negative space when looking through and into the structure. His innovative method of fabricating the spheres has resulted in a complex interplay between solid and void, the inside and outside, with the shadow-form of his body becoming tangible proof of his existence.
